Now is the time to call Blue Sky Chimney Sweeps to schedule your new chimney cap installation in late September or early October. Why now? Because your chimney’s summertime residents will be moving out shortly!
In Upstate South Carolina, squirrels and chimney swifts are two animal species that like to make their homes in our chimneys.
- Squirrels are determined and pesky critters that like to raise their families in chimneys, but they tend to sleep a lot in the winter, so they are much less active and definitely not having babies.
- Chimney Swifts are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Act and cannot be disturbed if they pick your chimney to nest in and settle in for the summer. However, in September and October, Chimney Swifts fly south as do many other birdkind.
This winter migration (chimney swifts) and lower activity level (squirrels) provide the perfect opportunity to have your chimney inspected; have it swept (if needed) in preparation for the Winter season……and have that chimney cap installed so those unwelcome guests will not take up residence next spring.
Chimney caps keep out more than just pesky critters and their associated parasites. Birds and squirrels can fill your chimney with highly-flammable nesting materials. And while most survive their sojourn in a chimney, there are occasional dead bodies. We all know what can happen when there are dead bodies. For everyone’s sake, it is usually better to keep the birds and squirrels out. Our chimney caps include an animal guard that is a barrier to animal entry.
Additionally, chimney caps
- protect your chimney from flying debris (leaves, twigs, etc.) around your home.
- keep out rain water, directing rain to the roof where it can clear via the gutters.
- contain sparks that may cause problems for roofs and surrounding foliage.
For many reasons, a chimney cap is a good addition to help keep any chimney healthy. Now is the time to call and schedule a visit to determine what cap best suits your chimney’s construction. We offer a variety of styles and materials for every chimney design and aesthetic taste. See our previous blog post for more information about chimney caps.
