Most people don’t know much about what really makes their home heating systems work. This would be true whether we have a standard HVAC system or if we operate a fireplace – either wood burning or with a gas appliance of some kind.  Most of us rely on professionals to check our systems out regularly and make repairs as necessary. We're Members of The NCSG! - Greenville SC - Blue Sky Chimney Sweeps

But if you are not having an active problem that causes you inconvenience, how do you know about any maintenance that could help avoid the really big potential problems that can take your fireplace or wood stove out of commission?

When it comes to fireplaces and chimneys, you can rely on the members of the National Chimney Sweep Guild. This trade organization is non-profit trade association with the purpose of facilitating better business practices for their members.  They provide progressive business services, encourage professionalism and ethical accountability, and endeavor to advance the chimney service industry through public awareness of the trade.  Yes it is a “trade” — complete with apprentices, journeymen and master technicians. It is even recognized by the US Department of Labor as such.

Membership in the National Chimney Sweep Guild indicates a real desire on the part of the Member to go the extra mile to exhibit professionalism and credibility in the practice of this most interesting trade.   Most Members find satisfaction in the rich and colorful history associated with Chimney Sweeping in America as well as the history of trade’s roots in Europe and Great Britain. As far as modern day applications, Members have access to regular business training and, if they choose to take advantage of the partnership with CSIA and NFI, the availability to participate in ongoing technical updates.   Maybe, more importantly to some, Members are required to sign and are held accountable to adhere to a Code of Ethics.  According the NCSG website, members pledge to:

  • Represent themselves and the company in a professional manner by providing services, education and skills that are in compliance with all codes and regulations applicable to the chimney service industry.
  • Continually update their knowledge, skills and techniques as new information evolves.
  • Render their services and represent their company in an honest and fair manner and to refrain from engaging in unfair or deceptive practices, including unfair or deceptive statements.
  • Conduct themselves in a decent, respectful, and professional manner when serving in the chimney sweep capacity.
